All UK telephone numbers begin with a '0'. The most important thing to remember when dialling a UK number from outside of the UK is that the zero is omitted. For example if you were trying to dial 0870 7117 222 you would only dial 870 7117 222. Remember this applies only if you are OUTSIDE the UK, from inside the UK you dial the number in full. Ok so you know to drop the first zero from any UK number. The next step is to find the INTERNATIONAL ACCESS CODE for the country you are currently in. Lets assume you are in the USA. Using our access code list you will find the access code for the USA is 011. This means any international number dialled from within the USA to an international number must be preceded with 011. So for our UK example we now know 0870 7117 222 becomes 011870 7117 222 from the USA. But your not ready to dial yet. You have dropped the first '0', added the access code of 011 but you must still use the international dial code for the country you are dialling. Looking at our list you will find the international dial code for the UK is 44. This goes after the access code so our final UK number becomes 01144870 7117 222. Remember all international numbers are dialled in the format: LOCAL COUNTRY ACCESS CODE + DESTINATION INTERNATIONAL DIAL CODE + LOCAL NUMBER. You will however also find many examples of where the UK number is already displayed in an international format. For example you may see: +44 870 7117 222 In this format you only need to add your own international access code. The 44 signifies the UK international code and the leading '0' has already been dropped. UK phone directory |
